Three Little Potatoes By: Steven
I have completed an investigation over a period of time. My topic is acids and potatoes. I think that this is a worthy topic because the investigation can tell you how strong the acids are. I chose this topic because my father gave me the wonderful idea to test acids and bases for my science investigation, but I got the idea to test something other than the bases. I wanted to do something that wasn't done very often or not done at all, something that was not so common. Then he told me that he had done an experiment back in school. He was trying to give me more ideas on what to do. The experiment had to do with potatoes. That is how I decided to use potatoes for my investigation.
The question I tried to answer was, "What will the acids do to the potatoes I have chosen to test in a ziplock bag?" I thought that this topic would be interesting because you never know what can happen, except that it will change in some sort of way. The circomphrance of the potato is what I will be measuring and how it changed. The circomphrance of the potato could of shrunk or the color might have changed.
Most or all of the potatoes I have chosen are or could be grown in Idaho. They are very popular so it is very obvious that the farmers make a lot of money. Many thing today are made from potatoes. For example, french fries, mashed potatoes, fried potatoes and potato chips.
My procedure was to first gather all of the materials. Then, I took the ziplock bags, opened them, and put a red, white and sweet potato in each of the bags after that. You then pour the orange juice into the three bags. Repeat the procedure for the vinegar in the bags and record your results.
Something a student could do in the future is see what other acids will do to other potatoes.
