BIRDS

My topic is about birds. For the past month my partner Anita and I have been tallying the birds that are in our neighborhoods. We spend 1-2 hours at a time counting the birds that come to our homes. We then record the type of bird we saw and the amount of birds we saw in a Bird Binder.

In the time period of one month we saw 503 birds in all. I believe that the fact that my neighbors have a lot of bird feeders might have helped and that there are all the things needed for survival in this area. There is water from the stream, food from the bird feeders and plants, shelter from danger, and space to fly in. Most of the birds were seen at my house since the habitat provided more of what they needed to survive. The only fact that may have scared some birds away were my two indoor-outdoor cats.

Most of the birds we saw were European Starlings, and the least was one owl. It's rather interesting, the day I saw the European Starlings was right at the begining of April. There they were, 87 European Starlings all perched in my tulip poplar in the backyard. They only stayed five minutes, but I counted fast. The owl lives in my backyard, he's been there for five years. As we got farther in to the month we saw less and less Starlings and more Robins. Thats because European Starlings migrate earlier then other birds.

Some of my questions are:

1. What other birds migrate?

2. Where do they go?

3. Where do they come from?

4. How come they don't get lost?

5. How do birds get their feathers?

6. How many types of birds are there?

7. Do birds get rabies?

8. If they do, how can you tell?

9. Do all birds migrate?
