Did you ever wonder if one rabbit would eat more than another? Well, my partner Sabrina and I did. The topic of our investigation is that we are trying to find out which of my rabbits eats more. The rabbits’ names and breeds are T.D. and she is Chocolate Dutch. Pepper is a Netherland Dwarf. Pepper is a male and is 1 year old. T.D. is 3 and is a female. We chose this topic because we like rabbits and have been wondering which one would eat more.
Rabbits are mammals. Just like us. Rabbits can be pets or wild animals. They eat lettuce, apples, carrots, rabbit pellets, grass, dandelions, and other fruits, vegetables, and plants.
My question I’m trying to answer is, when comparing a male rabbit which one eats more? I thought of this question because I was interested to see which of my rabbits eats more. The female rabbit I had before ate more than the male and I wanted to see if this female did too. My hypothesis is that the female rabbit eats more.
Sabrina and I used KIC Journals and the Internet for more information on this topic. In the KIC journal, Rachel H. discovered that her rabbit like a certain food better than others. We also used the Internet to find out more information. We discovered that you can feed two rabbits different foods and see which rabbit likes which food better. Rachel’s rabbit liked dandelions the best. Those were helpful articles.
To answer my question, I first weighed my rabbits. The female weighed 3 lbs. The male weighed 2 lbs. Then I started feeding the rabbits half a cup of their rabbit pellets each day. I buy these pellets at Warner Feed and Grain. Next, I watched to see which one ate more. After six weeks time, I weighed them again and the female weighed 4 lbs. And the male weighed 3 lbs. Later I tried cutting back on how much the male ate. I gave him ¼ cup of pellets each day. Finally, I weighed them again and the female weighed 4 lbs and the male weighed 2 lbs.
What I discovered? I discovered that my female ate more than my male. She ate a quarter of a cup more. I also learned that it takes about 2 to 3 weeks for their weight to change. Their weight didn’t change rapidly. Plus feeding them a ½ a cup keeps them from looking like rabbits that just came from an all you can eat buffet!
Something you could try next year is: to see if they will eat more than a friend’s rabbit, or something else close to that. Any ideas would be good! I wanted to try and see if my female rabbit ate more than my male dog Bucky. I didn’t have time to do this. Another question is: out of two female rabbits which one eats more. That sounds really neat!!!! I Wish I could have tried that!
