The topic of our science project was Rusty Nails. We chose this topic because Caren’s mother needs rusted nails for her birdhouses. We wanted to find out What liquid would rust nails first? We thought of this question from different ideas: Jessica wanted to find a liquid to rust metal. Caren wanted to know what type of water would rust nails first. So in order to find our question we just combined the m together.
To conduct our science project we first, found and gathered all the materials needed for the project. Next we filled the jars with the different liquids and placed plastic wrap over the top. Later we poked the nail through the plastic wrap (so only the tip of the nail touched the liquid) and waited for the results from the project.
From this experiment we learned different information about our project. We learned that from the liquids we used vinegar will rust aluminum nails first. We did some research on the black crystal and found that it is found in small dark caves. We could not find the name of it though. To bad!
Some suggestions for the students next year are you could try different sodas or waters and see which of them will rust the nail first. If you would like an idea for a different question related to our topic you could try one of the suggestions above but with a different material to rust. For example, copper, silver, or maybe even metal. If we would have had more time then we would investigate and try to find the name of the black crystal.
In conclusion, we enjoyed our project and had a fun time conducting it. We learned a lot and came up with good and interesting results.
