For KIC I am researching erosion on the model mountain in Mr. Pearce’s class room. I chose this topic because I enjoy learning more about the erosion and working with the model mountain. Another reason I am researching erosion is because I want to be an architect when I grow up. I will need to know about erosion when designing buildings.
My question for KIC is, “How many storms does it take to destroy a settlement equipped with walls and other things to keep it safe?” I thought of this question when I had existed every other possible subject to research for KIC. I thought about something I knew a bit about.
There are two types of soil erosion, natural and accelerated erosion. Erosion can be either caused by natural means or accelerated means (caused by humans). Erosion is the depletion and carrying away of soil on our planet and others like ours, made of rock.
My question has not been fully explored at the moment. I am in the middle of my investigation on erosion. But I have done some research. To answer my question, I first asked Mr. Pearce if I could use the class model mountain. The Model Mountain is a tub with sand in it. Out of the middle there is a pole that has a bucket on top. The bucket can be filled with water to pour on the mountain build below. Then I built a mountain to build things on like walls and towers to protect the houses put there. The mountain was constructed of sand and the height is on the next page. Last, I built different types of structures such as natural and man made structures.
There are many things I learned from these tests on the model mountain. Man made structures are more expensive but more efficient than natural structures. If you use a mini model mountain instead of a model mountain it takes more storms to destroy a settlement. So for the past three storms I’ve been working on the model mountain.
You might like to investigate my topic further than I did. Some suggestions I have are to investigate how a mountain covered in a hard susbstance with buildings on it. A question you might want to investigate is “What are the effects that plants have on erosion control?”
This is a fraction of the data that I have collected on the topic.
