Dogs and How Fast They Eat

By: Megan

The topic I’m presenting at KIC is Dogs. My partners are Abigail and Kristen. My colleagues and I chose the topic of Dogs because we all have dogs and we all are very interested in them. Another reason we chose to do an investigation on dogs is because we were eager to learn about dogs and their eating habits. That is why my partners and I chose to do the topic of dogs.

For every good investigation, a question should be included and I have just that. My question for KIC is; when comparing Pepper (Megan’s dog) with Stx (Kristin’s dog) which dog will eat 2˝ cups of Kibbles and Bits faster?.

Dogs are amazing animals. The two types of dogs that are being focused on during our presentation are the Chesapeake Bay Retriever (Stx) and the Labrador Retriever (Pepper). Both are sporting dogs. The two dogs are used to retrieve birds or other animals that have been hunted.

The Labrador retriever is one of the best-loved dogs in the world. “Labs” sailed with fishermen, earning their keep by picking up things such as fish an broken nets from the icy water of Newfoundland. Labrador Retrievers have a very keen sense of smell and a water-resistant coat of fur/hair. Since “Labs” are very friendly and easy to train they are often used as guides for the blind. Labradors serve as great friends and pets.

The Chesapeake Bay retriever is also a dog used in hunting to retrieve an animal that has been shot. With an oily coat and webbed beet, a “Chessy” can swim in cold seas for hours at a time. The water is never too cold for a Chesapeake Bay retriever. The Chesapeake Bay retriever is one of the few breeds developed in the United State. These dogs are characterized by their strength, endurance, and loyal devotion to their master. The Chesapeake Bay retriever are found as a pet, working for drug enforcement agencies, service dogs, visiting hospitals and nursing homes, some are avalanche or sled dogs. The Chesapeake Bay retriever was named after the Chesapeake Bay in 1964, that same year was when the Chesapeake Bay retriever became Maryland’s State Dog.

These two dog have great talents and they are the perfect pets.

There were many steps to answering our question. First I got together the materials needed (dogs, Kibbles n’ Bits dog food, measuring cups, and a timer). Next, I fed my dog while she was eating I timed her until she was finished her food. I performed the same task in step two for nine days around 5:00 pm. Then, I recorded my data. After each experiment, I called Kristin and Abby and we exchanged information. That is what I did to answer my question.

I discovered many facts from my investigation. I discovered that the Labrador retriever eats about 44 seconds faster than the Chesapeake Bay retriever. Also that on days that were much more humid, the dogs are their food slower than on days that were less humid.

Dogs are a great topic to research. In future years someone could try feeding their dog many different types of food and see what kind they eat faster. Also someone’s question could be: What if I mixed several types of dog food and feed it to my dog, would he/she eat it faster or slower than its regular food? That is a question a future student could investigate.
