I did research on dogs. My partners, Megan, Kristin, and I wanted to know how fast different kinds of dogs ate their food. We chose this topic because we wanted to know what kind of dog food our dogs like best. Since our dogs mean so much to use choosing our topic was very easy. We have devoted our research on our beloved pet dogs.
My question is this: “When comparing a Chesapeake Bay Retriever and a Black Labrador, which will eat Kibbles ‘n Bits faster?” We thought of the question after we decided on the subject of dogs. Since the dogs regularly are Dog Chow, we decided to time them while eating a different food. Our parents said O.K. and we began.
Dogs are a man’s best friend. Dogs are not only loveable and cute, but they also have important jobs. During the time of war dogs sniffed bombs, traps, and enemies. The dog’s traits helped them with these jobs. A dog can hear things farther away than any human. They can hear sounds up to 250 yards away. Although dogs can hear very far, most of them are colorblind. Un-like the human, a dogs normal body temperature is 101 degrees F. Scientists believe dogs are descendants of the MIACIS, who they believe descended into CYNODICTIS, which descended into TOMARCTUS. The tomarctus lived about 15 million years ago. As you can see, dogs have an interesting history.
Many steps were taken to investigate my topic. Megan, Kristin, and I first bought the dog food Kibbles ‘n Bits. We could not test on my dog because she has a health problem. Next we fed the dogs 2.5 cups of dog food. We then timed how long it took them to eat their food. We timed them for ten nights. Then, the next day at school we discussed the data and recorded the dog, time, and day. Next we made up the graph and typed the information at computer lab. We made our posters and typed up the script. As you can see our investigation took us a lot of time.
Our hypothesis was that the Black Labrador would eat faster. We were right. On more humid days the dogs ate slower than on less humid days. As an example, the Black Lab ate her food in 1 min. and 8 sec. and the Chesapeake Bay Retriever ate her food in 2 min and 15 sec. on a humid day. On a not so humid day the Black Lab ate her food in 58 sec. and the Chesapeake Bay Retriever ate her food in 1 min. and 24 sec.
Some things you might want to try are different dog foods. Just remember to keep a control* with your variables.** Another thing you could try that is related to the subject of dogs is get together with some friends that have dogs and do some research like me and my partners did. Remember to verify anything you research before you present your information at KIC or any other conference.
*Control- a variable that remains the same during different experiments
** Variable- a condition that can be changed in experiments
Verify- to prove that something is true
Hypothesis- an idea that can be investigated
Dog- a four-legged animal that feeds its young with milk
Miacis- a very old ancestor of the modern dog
Cynodictis- a more recent ancestor of the modern dog that lived more than 20,000 years ago.
Tomarctus- the most recent ancestor of the modern dog that lived about 15,000 years ago.
