EROSION CONTROL
By Mindy
My topic is about erosion. I chose my topic because I really like to watch erosion happen. Also, I really like science and when we learned about erosion.
My question is, "what materials can help slow down or stop erosion?" I thought of my question when I was working on the sand mountain because when I made a rain storm a lot of erosion happened, and I wanted to slow it down.
Erosion is the carrying away of things such as rocks, mud, dirt, and clay. Did you know that water is the most powerfull agent of erosion? To answer my question I completed many steps.
First, I made a model sand mountain that was 37 cm high. Next, I put different fencing on it like spoons and a small lid on different sides of the
mountain. Then, I had a rain storm,I used 1 gallon oi water I recorded my data and I did it again with plastic grid (needle point material). Some of the fencing I used were spoons,a lid, plastic grid, and popsicle sticks.
I discovered that on a scale of 0 -10 with 0 being the worst and 10 being the best I found out that plastic grid a 7 very good. The cup is a 5 on the scale.I also discovered that spoons do not slow down erosion .On the scale the spoons had a 2.
We could use the fencing to slow down erosion on a real mountain. We could use the the fencing to help stop some of the erosion from happening.lt could hold some of the dirt back and help slow down the erosion,
I think someone next year could try and find out who discovered erosion and how?And someone could find out if the fencing works to slow down soil erosion?
