Confessions of a Science Writer
Mary Cerullo
Author, Maine
Mary M. Cerullo, author of 12
children's books on the ocean and a handbook for teachers on using
children's literature in the science classroom, examines science trade
books from inside the trade. She guides participants through the
creation of nonfiction science books, from subject selection, through
the research and writing process, to the final design. Participants
will analyze trade books to assess their accuracy for use in teaching
science and employ comprehension strategies for nonfiction books to
enhance literacy learning. The goal of the workshop is to create a
dialogue among publishers, writers, and educators that will contribute
to the production of quality science trade books that help make
children savvy science investigators and better nonfiction readers and
expository writers.
