This session will introduce a
strategy known as the Science Writing Heuristic (SWH), demonstrating
how we can improve student understanding of science through embedded
language and literacy experiences. Implementation of the SWH within
elementary schools places demands on the use of talk, reading, and
writing as critical functions to promote an enriched understanding of
science and to build purposes for writing about science. Examples of
teacher practices and student work will be provided.
